Fina, the global governing body of aquatic sports, has withdrawn an honour presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but has stopped short of an outright suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes, as international federations (IFs) continue to react to the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin was awarded the Fina Order in October 2014, just months after Russia’s invasion and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula. The Fina Order is granted to a head of state or “individuals of high dignity”, who are judged to have achieved “remarkable merit” in the world of aquatics.
