Pro chess in chaos amid Carlsen-Niemann ‘cheating’ drama

Professional chess is in a state of complete chaos amid an ongoing 'cheating' scandal between Norwegian world champion Magnus Carlsen and rising American star Hans Niemann, which threatens to overshadow many of the gains the sport has made during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, 19-year-old grandmaster Niemann secured a surprise victory with the black pieces against Carlsen in the prestigious Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, Missouri – ending Carlsen’s 53-game unbeaten streak in classical, over-the-board tournaments – prompting the world No.1  to withdraw from the round-robin tournament a day later without any explanation.
