Paris 2020 is set to stage a number of events outside of the Stade Charléty during its hosting of next year’s European Athletics Championships.
In association with the City of Paris, the local organising committee will seek to take the Championships to the heart of the French capital by using Place du Trocadéro, which faces the Eiffel Tower on the other side of the River Seine.
While there will be no finals staged outside the Charléty, French newspaper L’Équipe said the men’s and women’s qualification events in the long jump will be held at the Place du Trocadéro, along with the start and finish of the half-marathon and the medal ceremonies.
Paris 2020 chairman Jean Gracia said the events will be held in a festival atmosphere, highlighting the ability to open up the Championships beyond the 12,000 tickets available per session in the Charléty. “(The Trocadéro) is a place through which an average of 70,000 people travel per day,” Gracia said.
Paris was awarded the hosting rights to the Championships in April 2017. The event will run from August 26-30, after the conclusion of the 2020 summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
