Pac-12 confirms China volleyball tour as latest global initiative

US college sports conference the Pac-12 has announced plans to stage a volleyball tour in China as part of its wider ‘Globalisation Initiative’ programme.

A 12-member Pac-12 all-star volleyball team will visit the country this summer to play a series of six matches against Chinese clubs and the national team. The tour is scheduled to run from June 18 to July 1.

Michael Sealy, head coach of the UCLA volleyball team, will also serve as head coach of the team for the China tour.

Confirmation of the tour comes after the Pac-12 last year staged a regular-season basketball game in China. The Washington Huskies faced off against Big 12 team Texas Longhorns at the Shanghai Mercedes-Benz Arena in November, marking the first occasion that a US sports league – collegiate or professional – had hosted a regular-season match in the country.

Both the tour and last year’s basketball match form part of the Globalisation Initiative, which, set up in 2011, aims to showcase the Pac-12 and its members institutions in China.
