ORF and Sky secure Austrian Bundesliga

ORF and Sky will jointly pay €17 million per year, up from the €14 million per year under the contract that expires at the end of 2009-10.

The deal is a blow to new Austrian commercial channel Servus TV – backed by energy drink manufacturer Red Bull – which tried to acquire the rights. Servus is understood to have offered more money, but the league opted for ORF as its free-to-air partner as the public broadcaster has a wider reach which in turn would lead to higher sponsorship income.

Under the new deal, ORF will continue to show 36 live games and highlights while Sky will show all 180 games live.
