NHL announces 2019 global series participants

The National Hockey League announced that the Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning will participate in the 2019 NHL Global Series.

The league has in recent years aggressively pushed increasing its European fanbase.

The Blackhawks will face the Flyers in a 2019-20 season-opening game against each other in Prague on Friday, October 4 at O2 Arena. The Sabres and Lightning will face off in a pair of regular-season games at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm on Friday, November 8 and on Saturday, November 9.

Additionally the Flyers and Blackhawks will complete their training camps in Switzerland and Germany and each will play an exhibition match as part of the 2019 NHL Global SeriesChallenge.

The European trip for Philadelphia will include the Flyers popular new mascot Gritty.

These two 2019 NHL Global Series events will mark the third straight year that the NHL has traveled to Europe to play regular-season games. Overall, the NHL has played regular season games in Europe during eight different seasons.
