Major League Soccer expansion team Nashville SC will face Atlanta United in its inaugural MLS game at Nissan Stadium on February 29, 2020, in what is likely be the start of a new regional rivalry between the franchises.
Atlanta United currently has a rivalry with Orlando City, which is featured during MLS Rivalry Week. But with Nashville closer in distance to Atlanta than Orlando, and with Florida gaining another team in Inter Miami CF a new southeast rivalry could be created.
“Since the day I got appointed as CEO of Nashville Soccer Club, one of the first people to call me was (Atlanta United FC president) Darren Eales,” Nashville SC chief executive Ian Ayre told The Tennessean. “One of the first comments he made was, ‘We cannot wait for you guys to get to MLS. You’ll be our biggest rival. Let’s bring it on.’ That still rings true today.”
Last week, it was announced that Inter Miami’s inaugural MLS home game will be against Los Angeles Galaxy, giving part owner David Beckham a reunion against his former team. The full 2020 MLS schedule will be announced at a later date.
