Munich votes against 2022 Olympic bid

Following a failure to gather support in a local referendum, Munich has decided against submitting a bid to host the 2022 winter Olympics.

Mayor Christian Ude revealed that the residents opposed a bid in all four regions of the German city, including the Alpine community of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, following Munich’s failed bid to host the 2018 winter Olympics.

Ude said: “I think it was not a problem with a concept, but rather a growing criticism of parts of the population with mega sports events.”

Results in Garmisch showed 54 per cent of the voters against the Games because of environmental, construction and financial concerns. Munich residents opposed the bid by 52 per cent, while citizens in Traunstein were close to 60 per cent against the bid, according to Reuters.
