The International Olympic Committee’s executive board will propose that its 2023 Session is hosted in Mumbai, with a decision to be taken at the next IOC Session, in Tokyo in July.
An IOC Session Evaluation Commission visited Mumbai in October 2019 and praised the quality of the Jio World Centre convention facility.
IOC president and executive board leader Thomas Bach said: “We have chosen India because it is the second most populous nation in the world, with a very young population and a huge potential for Olympic sport. We want to encourage and support the National Olympic Committee of India and all the National Federations to promote and strengthen Olympic sport in the country.”
The IOC Session is the general meeting of the organisation’s members, and is considered its ‘parliament’. The Session adopts, modifies and interprets the Olympic Charter and its decisions are final. It delegates certain powers to the executive board, and votes on proposals put forward by the board. The Session is held at least once a year, and takes place over two or three days.
