MLR strikes data, streaming partnership with Genius Sports

Major League Rugby has made its first significant move into the sports betting industry by striking a data and streaming partnership with sports data company Genius Sports.

Ahead of the scheduled 2021 season start on March 20, MLR has granted Genius Sports the exclusive rights to capture, manage, and distribute the league’s official data with sportsbooks across North America and worldwide.

MLR matches are set to be televised domestically on CBS Sports Network, FS1, and FS2. Non-broadcast games will be live-streamed with Genius Sports' network of sportsbook partners.

Genius Sports will also help safeguard MLR from betting-related corruption through its 24/7 bet monitoring, educational workshops, and model rules and regulations.

“We know there is interest in regulated betting on our matches and we have to take proactive measures to safeguard the integrity and transparency of our events,” said MLR commissioner George Killebrew. “We have the utmost confidence in Genius Sports Group to manage our data and deliver it to their sportsbook partners, further engaging all fans, old and new.”

MLR recently secured a multiyear agreement with American Airlines, which has been designated the official airline and travel partner of the league.

In a further boost, the LA Giltinis this week brought in former Australia international Matt Giteau as its latest star player, joining Adam Ashley-Cooper.
