Merritt Paulson, owner of the National Women's Soccer League's Portland Thorns, has announced he will sell the club following the revelations of his part in covering up misconduct allegations against former coach Paul Riley.

The decision represents a further escalation of an ongoing abuse scandal that has already seen Paulson step down from his role as both the Thorns and sister entity the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer, and is expected to generate a new record price for the franchise given the ongoing business growth of the NWSL.
