Businessman Ronald Mascariñas, owner of the title sponsor of the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3 men’s basketball league, has announced plans for a female 3×3 league, with a view to helping the Philippines field a women’s team in 3×3 basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3 men’s league is organised by the country’s national basketball federation, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, and sponsored by Mascariñas’ roast chicken brand. It was formed in 2018 to help the Philippines qualify for the 3×3 basketball event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which it duly did.

At a press conference yesterday, Mascariñas said: “For women’s basketball, 2019 was a breakthrough year. We renewed our commitment. We’re looking at making a 3×3 league for women and our target for both the men’s and women’s teams is automatic qualification for Paris 2024.”

Mascariñas also handed out financial awards to Afril Benardino, Jack Animam, Clare Castro and Janine Pontejos – four women who won gold for the Philippines in the women’s SEA Games 3×3. Each player received P100,000 ($2,000) in cash.

Mascariñas is the president and general manager of food company Bounty Agro Ventures.
