Maracana stadium bid winners suspended

A judge has ruled that the bidding process for the operating rights of Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium was unfair and has suspended the contract with bid winners IMX.

The venue, which will host the 2014 FIFA World Cup final and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, was awarded to IMG and EBX Group’s joint venture, IMX, on a 35-year contract last week.

However, according to BBC News, Judge Gisela Faria said: “Even before the bids were put forward, the principle of fairness among the competitors had been disregarded.”

The contract has now been suspended and a final ruling on the legality of the bidding process must be made before any company is allowed to secure the operating rights to the Maracana.
