The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has announced that the Manila, capital of the Philippines, will host its 3×3 World Cup in 2018.
The fifth edition of the showpiece 3×3 event will be organised by the Philippines Basketball Federation (SPB), with details regarding the exact location and time of the event to be announced in due course.
The 2018 World Cup will feature both men’s and women’s team events, as well as three individual competitions in the men’s dunk, women’s skills and mixed shoot-out contests.
At least 30 different countries and territories will be represented at the event and the selection of teams will be based on the Fiba 3×3 Federation Ranking, at the cut-off date of November 1 this year.
Alex Sanchez, 3×3 managing director at Fiba, said: “We are positive SPB and the passionate Filipino fans will make it an unbelievable experience for the best 3×3 players in the world and everyone watching on all platforms.”
The Philippines previously hosted stages of both the 2014 and 2015 Fiba 3×3 World Tour.
SPB executive director Sonny Barrios added: “Our two previous experiences hosting Fiba 3×3 events have been a success and 3×3 has become a centrepiece of our development program.”
The most recent edition of the World Cup took place in Guangzhou, China, last year, when Serbia won the men’s team event and the Czech Republic won the women’s team competition.
This year’s 3×3 World Cup will run from June 17-21 in Nantes, France.
