The Peruvian capital was elected at a general assembly held in the 2015 Games host city Toronto, which Lima’s bid lost out to four years ago. Its 2019 attempt won from bids by Ciudad Bolivar (Venezuela), La Punta (Argentina) and Santiago (Chile).
Lima won in the first round of voting with an overwhelming majority of 31 votes ahead of La Punta and Santiago’s nine votes apiece and Ciudad Bolivar’s eight votes. The 2019 edition of the quadrennial event will take place from July 26 to August 9.
Magali Silva, Peruvian minister of foreign trade and tourism, told the local news agency: “The city expects the Games will attract 75,000 tourists throughout the 15 days of competition, which will generate an income of $125 million.”
