Legalised sports betting officially launches in Pennsylvania

Legalised sports betting finally launched in Pennsylvania on Saturday, with Hollywood Casino in Grantville becoming the first sportsbook to accept a wager. The official launch came after two days of testing late last week.

Pennsylvania is now the seventh state where sports betting has been legalised in the US, following Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Delaware, Mississippi and West Virginia. It is, notably, the first with franchises in each of the four major professional sports leagues.

Hollywood Casino, at Penn National Race Course, beat its local rivals to the punch after having its application for a $10m (€8.8m) sports betting license approved by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. In the next few weeks Harrah’s Philadelphia, Parx Casino, Rivers Casino Pittsburgh and SugarHouse Casino are due to open their sportsbooks after having applications approved.

William Hill US is running the Hollywood Casino’s sportsbook operations and profits will be split equally between the two companies.

Online sports betting will follow in Pennsylvania in 2019.
