Kuwait postpones West Asian Games

“Due to the current circumstances in the region and to ensure the highest level of success for the tournament, the (Kuwait Olympic) committee decided to postpone the second West Asian Games in Kuwait,” Kuwait Olympic Committee chairman Sheikh Talal Fahd al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah said.

It said a new date for the Games, originally scheduled from October 20-30, would be announced at a special session of the General Assembly of the Federation of the West Asian Games to be called later.

Tension has risen in the Gulf since the US sent forces to areas within striking distance of Afghanistan, for possible retaliation over the September 11 attacks on New York City and Washington DC.

The Games were awarded to Kuwait in January after Lebanon pulled out for financial reasons.
