Games developer and Barcelona sponsor Konami has blocked the club’s Sergi Roberto from participating in an e-sports football tournament, it is claimed.

It is reported that the brand made the decision to stop Spanish midfielder Roberto and Alejandro Pozo, who plays for RCD Mallorca, another LaLiga side it sponsors, because the tournament was being played on the Fifa 20 game, which is developed by rival company EA Sports.

In June 2019, the agreement between Konami and Barcelona was renewed until 2023. Its deal with Mallorca is due to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season. The full sponsorship portfolios of both clubs can be viewed in detail on the SportBusiness Soccer platform.

The competition was set up Spanish celebrity Ibai Llanos, with all proceeds from the event going to charity Unicef. It took place at the weekend, with Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio victorious.
