Kazan to hold poll for 2024 Olympic bid

The mayor of Russian city Kazan will hold an opinion poll to help decide whether the city should bid for the 2024 summer Olympics.

The city is currently hosting the World University Games and has been encouraged to bid for the 2024 Olympics by Russian Olympic Committee chief Alexander Zhukov.

Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin said: "This issue is under serious discussion not only in the media, but in society. It is the most serious of issues and requires a thorough work-through by the leaders of the country and the [Tatarstan] republic. We also need to ask the advice of the people. I want to conduct a survey to find out what our citizens want.”

Bidding for the 2024 Games opens in 2015, and other regions interested in hosting the event include a city from the United States, South Africa, Paris, Doha and Rome amongst others.
