Sports retailer JD is paying €100,000 ($109,570) per season as the new main sponsor of League of Ireland Premier Division football club Shamrock Rovers, according to sports industry sources.
The two-year deal marks JD’s first step into club football in Ireland where the brand is currently an Official Sponsor of the Irish Football Association.
JD is also the shirt sleeve partner of English Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion – a sponsorship that has run for the last three seasons on rolling one-year terms.
Under the new deal, the JD logo will feature on the front of the Shamrock Rovers’ first team and youth team jerseys. At youth academy level, JD will support the development of football trials which will give young players the chance to play for the club.
Shamrock Rovers are the current FAI Cup champions – a trophy it has won a record 25 times. The club has also won a record 17 league titles.
Dara Goolsby, JD’s head of retail marketing in Ireland, said it was an exciting time for Shamrock Rovers as the club looks to build on last season’s FAI Cup win.
Goolsby said: “JD were impressed by its relentless ambition to compete for senior domestic and Uefa Europa League honours and most especially by its strategy to develop its youth academy, to attract young players and to nurture their talent as future stars of the game. We look forward to supporting the club at all levels.”
JD operates 38 stores in Ireland, 23 of which are located in the Republic of Ireland, and also retails online at www.jdsports.ie.
