After an executive board meeting in Madrid earlier this week, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) announced a new competition to be added to its calendar named the Sprint and Team World Championships, with the first edition in 2022 to be hosted in Montreal, Canada.
The Sprint and Team World Championships will comprised of the following events: Age-Group Sprint; Age-Group Mixed Relay; Junior; Junior/U-23 Mixed Relay; Elite Mixed Relay World Championships; and an Elite Super Sprint semi-final and finals part of the World Triathlon Series
The Elite World Championships, along with the Standard Distance and Super-sprint Age Group, Para-triathlon and U-23 World Championships will be hosted in Abu Dhabi in 2022.
The executive board, led by president Marisol Casado, also appointed RBL Brand Agency for a full rebranding exercise for the ITU, selecting them for their “creative, innovative and supportive approach, as well as for their vast experience in this field to help us face the upcoming years with a renovated strategy and image to take our sport even further”.
The award of the rebranding contract came after presentations from three different design agencies.
Other items on the agenda included approval for the 2020 Olympic Games to serve as an event for the World Triathlon Series rankings, with five races plus the Grand Final counting towards the world title. In addition, the Executive Board also addressed the Global Safety Task Force, which is working on a comprehensive study on fatalities in triathlons, and discussed the implementation of projects to boost the number of female coaches in the sport.
