The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has awarded hosting rights for this year’s edition of the World Tour Grand Finals to the Chinese city of Zhengzhou.
The event will take place from December 12-15, remaining in Asia for a second consecutive year after the 2018 Grand Finals took place in Incheon, South Korea.
The 2019 Grand Finals will provide $1m (€900,000) in prize money, the highest on offer in the sport. In addition, the Finals will serve as a direct qualification event in the mixed doubles pairs for the 2020 summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“Today’s announcement is the fruit of a flourishing partnership between the ITTF and CTTA (Chinese Table Tennis Association), with both parties fully committed to taking the sport of table tennis to unprecedented heights,” Steve Dainton, ITTF chief executive, said.
In April, the ITTF awarded its 2022 World Championships to Chengdu.
