The International Table Tennis Federation has asked organisers of this year’s Hana Bank World Team Table Tennis championships in Busan, South Korea to look for a new date in 2021.

Following a meeting of the ITTF executive committee yesterday (Thursday) and an update from its Covid-19 task force, the international federation decided that the event, scheduled for September 27 to October 4, cannot now take place as most teams will not be able to fly to South Korea.

The ITTF said in a statement it is hopeful of staging full open international events in the last quarter of 2020 and is studying the idea of holding alternative, regionally-based and invitational events earlier in 2020. It is also considering an overhaul of its original 2021 calendar planning in the coming weeks.

The ITTF executive committee approved the qualification system adjustments for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games which will be formally announced once confirmed by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee.

Details on financial support for national associations, players and foundation projects affected by the Covid-19 pandemic are also to be announced soon.

The ITTF executive committee will meet again on June 23 and will go ahead with holding its AGM online on September 28.
