The Ironman triathlon series has announced details of a new event in the US state of California, which will debut in December.
The Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells-La Quinta event will be co-hosted by the two cities and will take place on December 9.
The triathlon will begin with a 1.2-mile swim in Lake Cahuilla before a 56-mile single-loop bike route along rural roads which will then return through La Quinta and into Indian Wells.
Athletes will then transition to the running section of the race, which will begin near the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens stadium and take in the Indian Wells Golf Resort.
“We are excited to expand our offering of events in California,” Beth Atnip, Ironman’s head of operations for North America, said. “Partnering with Indian Wells and La Quinta allows us to showcase this amazing landscape while also expanding the North American triathlon season later in the year for our athletes.”
The event will offer 30 slots to the 2019 Ironman 70.3 World Championship, which takes place on September 8-9 in Nice, France. The event will also feature a professional prize purse of $25,000 (€21,000).
Ironman 70.3 events are half the distance of a full-length Ironman race.
