The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) has unveiled an eight-team tournament based on the successful franchise model established in the country by cricket’s Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Cue Slam-Indian Cue Masters League will be held between June and August and have eight franchises from yet-to-be-announced cities competing against each other home and away.
A format featuring the disciplines of snooker, billiards and pool will result in matches being completed in an hour. Each team will be made up of an international player, two Indians including an ‘icon’ player, a female player, a celebrity and a junior player. Players will be selected using a draft system.
Sports agency Sportzlive is working alongside the BSFI to organise the event, which will stage its semi-finals and finals in New Delhi.
BSFI president, PVK Mohan, told a press conference: “This is another dream coming true and (it) will happen. We will see top players in it. We are confident our partners in this venture, Sportzlive, will add value to our sport.”
The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Federation (WPBSA) will work alongside the BSFI in launching the Cue Slam.
WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said: “We conduct 28 major ranking events. Snooker is growing in India.”
