The International Olympic Committee has stepped up its attack on Fifa’s plans to make the World Cup a biennial event, with one member saying the proposal would do “immeasurable damage” to global sport.

Fifa’s proposals were a talking point at today’s IOC Session in Beijing. Football was signed off as one of 28 sports on the initial programme for the 2028 summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, but the IOC said it would “continue to monitor the evolution” of the international match calendar.
