IOC confident FIFA will avoid 2022 clash

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is confident that FIFA will discuss possible dates for its 2022 Qatar World Cup before making a final decision, in order to avoid clashing with the winter Olympics.

Despite the IOC not awarding hosting rights of its 2022 winter Games until 2015, it would like to negotiate the World Cup schedule with FIFA ahead of its decision at an executive board meeting on October 3.

An IOC spokesman said: "We were aware that FIFA might consider changing the dates for the 2022 World Cup. We are confident that FIFA will discuss the dates with us so as to co-ordinate them and avoid any effect on the winter Games."

FIFA – which is headed by IOC member Sepp Blatter – has proposed a possible November/December World Cup, but European football leagues would prefer to host the tournament in January/February, avoiding disruption to the UEFA Champions League and domestic leagues.
