Innsbruck to host 2018 IBSF European Championships

The International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) has confirmed that Innsbruck in Austria will host its 2018 European Championships.

The event will take place at the Olympia Eiskanal alongside the IBSF Bobsleigh & Skeleton World Cup from December 15-17 next year.

Innsbruck will also host the fifth event of the 2017-18 IBSF World Cup season from December 11-17 this year – just weeks ahead of the 2018 winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

The hosting news will boost advocates of Innsbruck’s bid for the 2026 winter Olympics.

Last month, stakeholders behind the bid sought to bolster their claims ahead of an October referendum by presenting a 10-point plan to the public, confirming that their vision involves taking events to Germany.

A referendum on the 2026 bid is due to be held in parallel with the Austrian parliamentary elections on October 15. In June, bid organisers said the Austrian city could host the Olympics on a budget of €1.175bn ($1.35bn) thanks to a plan that would avoid the development of new permanent infrastructure.
