Indian government updates protected sports broadcasts list

India's government has updated the list of sports events for which rights must be shared with public-service broadcaster Prasar Bharati.

The new list covers:

  • Multi-sport events
    • All Olympic Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • Asian Games
  • Cricket
    • All official One-Day International, T20 and Test matches played by the Indian men’s and women’s cricket team
    • All International Cricket Council Test matches featuring India
    • Semi-finals and final of the ICC men’s and women’s One-Day International World Cup
    • Semi-finals and final of the ICC men’s and women’s T20 World Cup
    • Semi-finals and final of the ICC Champions Trophy
    • Semi-finals and final of the ICC World Test Championship
    • Semi-finals and final of the ICC Men’s and Women’s Asia Cup (T20 and One-Day International competitions)
    • India matches, semi-finals and finals at the Under-19 ICC World Cup.
  • Tennis
    • Davis Cup - all matches featuring India
    • Grand Slam tournaments - the finals of men’s and women's singles competitions, and all matches featuring Indian players from the quarter-finals onwards; and all matches featuring Indian players in men’s doubles, women’s doubles or mixed doubles from quarter-finals onwards.
  • Hockey
    • World Cup - all matches featuring India, and the semi-finals and final
    • Champions Trophy - all matches featuring India and the final
    • International Hockey Federation - Hockey Pro League matches
    • Indira Gandhi Gold Cup for women - semi-finals and final
    • Hockey India sub-junior national championship
    • Hockey India Academy National Championship
    • Men’s Junior Men World Cup when India is the host country
    • Sultan Azlan Shah Cup - all matches featuring India, and the semi-finals and final.
  • Football
    • Fifa World Cup - opening match, quarter finals, semi-finals and final
    • AFC Asian Cup - all matches featuring India, and semi-finals and final
    • Santosh Trophy - semi-finals and final
    • Asian Women’s Football Cup, when India is the host country
    • Fifa Under-17 Women’s World Cup, when India is the host country
    • Fifa Under-17 Men's World Cup - opening match, quarter finals, semi-finals and final.
  • Badminton
    • England Open Badminton Championship - all matches featuring Indian players, semi-finals and finals
    • Badminton World Federation World Cup Championship - all matches featuring Indian players, semi-finals and finals.
  • Other
    • Kabaddi World Cup - all matches featuring India, and semi-finals and finals
    • International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup, Commonwealth Shooting Championship and Commonwealth Archery Championship when India is the host country
    • Khelo India Games, Khelo India School Games, Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India University Games, Khelo India Games for differently-abled persons, Khelo India Games for Indigenous Sports and Khelo India Winter Games
    • International events organised by India's national sports federations.
India's protected sports events list was established in 2007 by the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act. It requires that the holders of the rights in India of the identified sports events must share with Prasar Bharati an advertising-free, live signal of the events.
