Serie A club AC Milan has appointed Maikel Oettle, an experienced sponsorship executive, to the newly-created position of head of sponsorship sales.
Oettle has left his role as vice-president of strategic partnerships at IMG, where his responsibilities included commercial strategy for the joint venture with Euroleague Basketball, negotiating international sponsorship and licensing deals, along with strategic partnerships.
Oettle joined IMG in 2017 and also headed up sales for IMG Events in Germany.
The Endeavor-owned IMG signed a 10-year joint venture agreement with Euroleague Basketball to form new basketball competitions in Europe from the 2016-17 season onwards.
The Serie A side said that the creation of the new position and appointment of Oettle, who began his new duties today, is aimed at driving increased sales and revenue within its commercial operation.
Casper Stylsvig, chief revenue officer at AC Milan, said: “Maikel has an excellent track record in delivering innovative commercial partnerships for both brands and rightsholders.”
Oettle’s other experience in the sports industry includes a 15-month spell at fantasy sports operator DraftKings as international head of partnerships and sponsorships. He also spent a year as sponsorship sales manager at DFL Sports Enterprises, the commercial rights sales arm of the Bundesliga (now known as Bundesliga International).
Between 2008 and 2015, he worked at online betting company Bwin, the Milan club’s former shirt sponsor.
AC Milan’s current shirt sponsor is Emirates after the Dubai-based airline took over from Bwin at the start of the 2010-11 season. Germany-based sportswear giant Puma is the club’s kit supplier.
Recent sponsorship deals signed by the Serie A club have included a three-year deal with global security provider Axitea and a one-season renewal with leather accessories manufacturer Piquadro.
