The IMG agency, which organises the World Rallycross Championship (World RX), has confirmed it will launch a new Americas Rallycross Championship (ARX) this year.
The series will feature four events in 2018, starting with a race at the UK circuit of Silverstone on May 25-27 as part of the Speedmachine Festival, which will also include a round of the World RX.
Other destinations on the calendar will include Trois-Rivières in Canada on August 4-5 and Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on September 29-30. Both events are also on the World RX calendar. Details of a fourth event, to be held in the US, have not yet been confirmed.
IMG will run ARX for the headline Rallycross Supercar category, as well as the ARX2 series for Supercar Lites. The news comes after it was announced that the Global Rallycross Championship will curtail its Supercar class in favour of the Lites category.
Volkswagen and Subaru are among the manufacturers that will support ARX, with Cooper Tires signed up as an official partner, expanding on its existing relationship with the World RX series.
“ARX is a very exciting opportunity to use our experience from World RX to grow the sport in the Americas,” said Paul Bellamy, senior vice-president and managing director of motorsports at IMG. “We see huge potential in ARX and will work closely with all key stakeholders and possible new venues to develop ARX into a major championship over the next few years.”
