IMG-Reliance enters athlete representation market

IMG-Reliance, the joint venture between the IMG agency and Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, has broadened its remit by entering into the athlete representation business.

IMG-Reliance has signed Indian national team cricket player Rohit Sharma (pictured), captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise the Mumbai Indians, and rising star Hardik Pandya as two of its first clients in the initiative. Tennis player Leander Paes, a multiple doubles grand slam champion, has also joined the IMG-Reliance family.

A spokesperson for IMG-Reliance told Indian newspaper the Economic Times: “IMGR's unparalleled industry knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit in sports and lifestyle property management led us to foray into talent management. As the first corporate entity to venture into this field, we see tremendous opportunity in this space, and we're very excited to bring this expertise in-house.”

IMG-Reliance said it will work closely with athletes on strategic career management and provide extensive resources and expertise to generate value in all facets and stages of their careers, except for their individual playing contracts. The firm will also look to exploit revenue streams such as endorsements, appearances and licensing.
