GLOBAL RESPONSE TO TSUNAMI CRISIS

And as world sports’ response gathers momentum, the IOC, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation have each made commitments to the aid effort.

FIFA’s emergency committee has pledged $2million to taking the solidarity fund established by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to $3million.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter and AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam have agreed that these funds should be used to help the affected member associations (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand) as well as the local population of the stricken region.

As the international community has already raised such a substantial amount of money, FIFA has decided to concentrate on reconstructing the footballing infrastructure in the affected areas.

FIFA and the AFC intend to organise matches in the region to demonstrate solidarity and support. They will also work together to evaluate the situation in the African countries (Kenya, Seychelles, Somalia and Tanzania) also affected by the disaster.

IOC president, Jacques Rogge, announced that the IOC will make a donation of $1million to support the victims of the catastrophe.
