Liga 1, the top tier of domestic football in Indonesia, has returned to action following October’s stadium disaster at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang.
The Liga 1 season was suspended immediately following the incident on October 1. Some 135 people, including more than 40 children, died following a stampede which occurred during a match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya. Fans invaded the pitch and were met with teargas from police. The ensuing panic led to supporters rushing towards the stadium’s exits, which caused a crush.
