FIVB partners with p1440 for new Las Vegas event

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has teamed up with p1440, an events series co-founded by US beach volleyball legend Kerri Walsh-Jennings, to host a four-star, double-gender World Tour event in Las Vegas later this year.

The FIVB Las Vegas Open presented by p1440 will take place in the US city from October 17-21. It will mark the first time that Las Vegas has staged an event on the international circuit.

The partnership between the FIVB and p1440 is designed to elevate beach volleyball on a global scale and provide athletes from around the world with a chance to compete.

The p1440 event series combines professional tournaments with live music, a health and wellness village and development experiences. The Las Vegas event will provide athletes with ranking points for qualification to the Tokyo 2020 summer Olympic Games.

FIVB president Ary Graça said: “The FIVB has always been committed to combining volleyball and entertainment, while also promoting healthy lifestyles, and so we welcome p1440’s focus in this area.”

The qualifiers for the event will be held on October 17, with the 32-team main draw for men and women to start the following day. Both finals will be held on October 21. The prize purse for the event will be $300,000 (€265,000), which will be split equally between the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Walsh-Jennings, a three-time Olympic gold medal winner, said: “The FIVB is the global authority in the volleyball world, and as a professional athlete who has played for more than 15 years on the FIVB World Tour, I feel honoured to partner with them for p1440’s second event in its inaugural season.

“The FIVB has significantly contributed to the immense success of the sport in the Olympic Games, and it is only suitable that p1440 is collaborating with the top organisation in our sport. I am ecstatic for p1440 and the FIVB to come together to enhance the sport of beach volleyball internationally and give the best players in the world the opportunity to exhibit their passion and talent in the US market.

“The fact that this event is one of the events bearing Olympic ranking points for Tokyo 2020 is deeply personal to me and this collaborative spirit of unity is in the best interest of everyone within our sport.”

The event will feature a range of immersive experiences such as live music, a development village featuring high-intensity interval workouts and volleyball training, a health and wellness village with daily yoga sessions, live cooking demos, tips from health experts, samples from wellness vendors and more. A dedicated ‘Kids Court’ will also be set up that will include activities, short workouts and challenges and educational discussions.

The p1440 group will stage its inaugural event in San Jose on September 28-30.
