German football club Schalke 04 has sold its licence for a starting place in esports’ League of Legends European Championship (LEC), citing the financial impact on its business model of Covid-19 and its relegation to the 2. Bundesliga.
The Gelsenkirchen club was last season relegated from the top-tier Bundesliga for the first time in 30 years and is now preparing for life in the second tier.
