FIG awards 2019 Artistic Worlds to Stuttgart

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has confirmed that the German city of Stuttgart will host the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Stuttgart, which hosted FIG world championships in 1989 and 2007 and will stage this year’s Rhythmic World Championships in September, edged out Rotterdam in the Netherlands in the final vote.

The announcement was one of a number of decisions made by the FIG during its Council meeting in Melbourne, Australia.

The Council unanimously approved several changes to the FIG Disciplinary Code and a new qualification system for trampoline gymnastics for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Bangkok in Thailand was also selected as the host of the May 2016 Council meeting.

The FIG also approved “with an overwhelming majority” a new format that will reduce the number of gymnasts in the team competition from five to four for the Tokyo Olympics. The move will open up 24 extra spaces for male and female Olympic gymnasts.
