Basketball’s global governing body Fiba has announced a partnership with the Los Angeles Times media group to host the 3×3 World Tour Final to the city of Los Angeles for the four-year period from 2020 to 2023.
The news is a development of an earlier partnership between the two which will see the LA Times sponsor this year’s Fiba 3×3 World Tour Masters event in the city in September, part of the inaugural Times-organised LA Street Festival. Starting next year, the Fiba 3×3 World Tour Finals will form the centrepiece of future editions of that festival.
The three-on-three format is becoming an increasing focus for Fiba, with growth in the United States – the world’s most lucrative basketball market – a key goal. Last month, the US men’s team were crowned world champions at the Fiba 3×3 World Cup in Amsterdam. Next year, the format will make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games.
“This partnership is a breakthrough for the growth of 3×3 basketball,” Fiba secretary general Andreas Zagklis said. “We are excited to bring our urban discipline to the next level in North America with a renowned and innovative group like the Los Angeles Times. This will undoubtedly cement the FIBA 3×3 culture in the build up to the Los Angeles 2028 Games.”
