The Fiba Europe division of Fiba, basketball’s global governing body, has confirmed that five countries have applied to organise the EuroBasket national team tournament in 2017.
Finland, Israel, Poland, Romania and Turkey all submitted official bids ahead of Monday’s deadline. Evaluation commissions will this month visit each candidate venue before reporting their findings to the Fiba Europe board.
Candidates had the option of bidding for the whole event, one group phase group or a group phase group and the final phase.
Fiba Europe will reach a decision at its next session on December 12.
This year’s event took place in September and was co-hosted by Croatia, France, Germany and Latvia. Spain defeated Lithuania 80-63 in the final to claim its third European title. EuroBasket 2015 was originally due to be held in Ukraine only for hosting rights to be withdrawn due to the unstable geo-political situation in the country.
