The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has announced that its 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament will be held in the Indian city of Bengaluru between 18 and 22 March.
40 teams – 20 from each gender – from 36 different countries will compete in the qualifying event, playing for six potential places at this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Those six will join the eight already-qualified teams who gained access through the Fiba world ranking system at the end of last year, with the final two places to be made up from the winners at the 3×3 Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Budapest, Hungary in April.
Bengaluru, known as the ‘Silicon Valley of India’, has been a frequent host of Fiba events in the last few years, staging the U16 Women’s Asia Cup and senior Women’s Asia Cup in 2017, and the U18 Women’s Asia Cup in 2018.
“We are excited to welcome teams from 36 different countries to Bengaluru, a city which has played host to successful Fiba competitions in recent history”, said Govindaraj Kempareddy, president of the Basketball Federation of India.
This year’s Games will mark the debut of 3×3 basketball at the Olympics, with Fiba promoting the variant form of the game as a more accessible and easy-to-learn format for potential players around the world.
