German Bundesliga football club FC Köln has extended the contract of its main sponsor REWE Group, the German supermarket chain.
The association, which dates back to 2007, had been due to run until the end of the 2020-21 sesaon, but will now continue until the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign.
The previous extension began in 2017-18 and was worth around €5m ($3.6m) per year, as detailed by SportBusiness Soccer. The new agreement is worth a basic sum of €6.5m per year, according to the Cologne-based newspaper Express.
REWE Group continues to be afforded the designation of front-of-shirt sponsor as part of the deal.
Market surveys suggest the sponsorship one of the best-known associations in the Bundesliga, the club said.
Alexander Wehrle, managing director of FC Köln, said: ”The early extension of our cooperation in a time that is extremely difficult for society as a whole, including professional football, is a strong signal that we are very pleased about.”
It is the highest-value contract in FC Köln’s sponsorship portfolio, which includes 25 sponsorship deals.
