ESPN has revealed the sport disciplines that will be included at its X Games in Aspen next year.
Held on January 23-26, snowboarder X and snowmobile long jump, return to the X Games after brief hiatuses, with the former appearing in 2012 and snowmobile long jump (then called knockout) last included in 2010.
Ten of the 17 events to be contested in Aspen will also feature two weeks later in the Sochi winter Olympics. Among those events, longstanding X Games disciplines ski and snowboard slopestyle and ski superpipe will make their Olympic debuts. They join existing Olympic disciplines snowboard superpipe and snowboarder X as events that made the leap from the X Games to the Olympics.
Snowmobile freestyle also returns to the X Games Aspen, one year after Caleb Moore died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash during competition. Event organisers have made modifications to increase safety in the event, including mandatory torso and chest protectors for competing athletes and springs on snowmobile skis to keep them facing upward upon landing.
However, snowmobile best trick will not be contested in 2014. Also absent from the line-up are skier X and mono skier X, two disciplines that have traditionally used the same course as the snowboarder X competitors.
