The England women’s national soccer team has decided to opt out of next year’s SheBelieves Cup in the United States in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
The prestigious invitational international women’s soccer tournament is held in the States every year around February or March. The four-team event is organized by the United States Soccer Federation.
England has played in the event every since its inception in 2016, winning the competition in 2019.
The Football Association said in a statement: “The FA has taken the decision not to enter next year’s SheBelieves Cup in the USA. England Women have been privileged to play in the tournament since its inception in 2016, challenging some of the best teams in the world. Our withdrawal from the competition in 2021 is based on existing uncertainties around the future trend of the Covid-19 pandemic, together with a detailed review of our technical priorities for England Women.”
