Dortmund builds business revenues

German Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund has set a new benchmark for revenues excluding transfer business, as overall revenue decreased year-on-year due to major outgoings in the previous accounting period.

For the 2018-19 financial year, the period ending June 30, 2019, Borussia Dortmund Group reported consolidated revenues of €489.5m ($548.9m), down from €536m in the previous year. However, the 2017-18 figures were inflated by the sales of the likes of Ousmane Dembélé to Spanish club Barcelona and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to English team Arsenal for reported fees of €105m and €63.75m, respectively.

Indeed, Dortmund reported that – excluding transfer business – consolidated revenues rose year-on-year by €56m, to €369.3m. Of the €489.5m total for 2018-19, €167.3m came from broadcast rights, versus last year’s figure of €122.3m.

Transfer revenue decreased sharply, from €222.7m to €120.2m. Sponsorship and advertising revenue rose from €94m to €96.8m. Managing director Thomas Treß said this rise could largely be attributed to the international marketing of virtual banner advertising. “The subject of digitisation shows where further growth areas lie,” Treß added.

Profit after tax for the group in 2018-19 amounted to €17.4m, versus last year’s €31.7m. Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “We are a strong brand and will continue to consistently work on the German market, but just as consistently on the international market, especially in America and Asia.

“Our journeys bear fruit. The trip to the USA was a complete success. In the sports field we have created the conditions for a successful season. We have a good team, a good team of coaches and are very enthusiastic about our goals.”
