Disney said its Disney+ entertainment-focused streaming video service has surpassed 50m subscribers worldwide since debuting just five months ago, highlighting a sharply accelerating growth rate.
The subscriber number is up by more than 22m from figures released just two months ago with quarterly earnings. While the Disney+ service isn’t specifically part of the company’s sports holdings, the remarkable early success of the streaming product helps significantly to lift the fortunes of the entire company, which includes sports media giant ESPN and its own sister streaming service, ESPN+, that is sold in part as a bundle with Disney+ and Hulu.
