Marc Hope, director of rights marketing at The Sports Consultancy, has left his position after just under five years at the London-based agency and consultancy.

The Sports Consultancy told SportBusiness that Hope has left by “mutual consent” and that the sponsorship sales team will now be led by the promoted Fraser Houlder. The agency said that it will “continue to represent a large number of leading international rights-holders as all areas of the business continue to grow”.

Hope was recruited from SMAM, the Lagardère-owned Commonwealth Games sponsorship sales agency, in February 2015 as The Sports Consultancy announced a “bolstering of its commercial services offering”.

The Sports Consultancy said today (Monday): “Over the last five years Marc has helped The Sports Consultancy build a successful sponsorship sales practice within the wider global consultancy and rights sales business, and has secured over 100 sponsorship agreements for clients including British Athletics, London 2017 World Athletics Championships, UCI Road World Championships Yorkshire 2019 and the FEI.”

Hope (pictured) is best known for heading up The Sports Consultancy’s brokering of sponsorship deals in athletics. These included national partners and suppliers secured for London 2017, along with sponsors for major athletics events held in the UK and finding sponsorship partners for British Athletics.

One of the headline agreements secured was the addition of dairy products brand Müller as a major British Athletics sponsor and title sponsor of top athletics meetings in the UK. The agreement was subsequently extended at the start of this year and now runs until 2021.

Other projects headed up by Hope included the acquisition of sponsors for Scotland’s Commonwealth Games team, one of his various business activities at The Sports Consultancy north of the border.

Upon leaving, Hope said that he is “starting a new chapter” and that there are “four contracting British Athletics multi-year deals” in the pipeline. He is to continue to work in the sports sponsorship space through his consultancy, Marc Hope Consulting.

Before joining SMAM in 2011, Hope was in charge of Fast Track’s rights marketing team, negotiating sponsorship deals on behalf of UK Athletics. He spent over a decade at the agency, during which time the agency was acquired by Chime Communications (in 2007).

Houlder arrived at The Sports Consultancy in February 2018 as head of cycling sales. He was previously a director at Female Sports Group, a consultancy dedicated to female and mixed gender sport. Houlder also spent 16 years at BDS Sponsorship, the UK-based sponsorship consultancy, working his way up to become general manager.
