European basketball’s governing body, Fiba Europe, has awarded hosting rights for the 2017 edition of its EuroBasket Women tournament to the Czech Republic.
The Fiba Europe board voted for the Czech Republic ahead of a rival bid from Serbia. Fiba Europe president Turgay Demirel described both candidates for the national team event as “outstanding.”
EuroBasket Women 2017 will revert to a 16-team and shorter competition format following the 2015 event co-hosted by Hungary and Romania, which concluded yesterday (Sunday).
Having never previously finished on the podium, Serbia took its first EuroBasket Women title after a 76-68 triumph against France in front of over 5,000 fans in Budapest.
