The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has awarded hosting rights for the 2021 edition of its Artistic Gymnastics World Championships to Copenhagen.
The Danish capital will host the Championships, which will mark the 50th edition of the event, for the first time, but Aarhus did stage the 2006 event.
The 2021 Championships will mark the first in the new cycle leading in to the 2024 summer Olympic Games in Paris. The event will be staged at the new Royal Arena, which opened in Copenhagen last year.
Anders Jacobsen, president of the Danish Gymnastics Federation, said: “An event of this format fits very well into the course and development we have for gymnastics in Denmark.
“I'm sure many of our nearly 200,000 members – and the rest of Denmark – will have a gymnastics experience for life when we host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2021 together with Sport Event Denmark and the city of Copenhagen.”
The Artistic Gymnastics World Championships are held on an annual basis, aside from summer Olympic Games years. The Canadian city of Montreal hosted last year’s edition, while gymnasts will head to Doha, Qatar for this year’s event, which takes place from October 25 to November 3.
The German city of Stuttgart will stage the 2019 Championships.
