Coe backs Dubai’s Olympic ambitions

Sebastian Coe, the man who led the successful delivery of the 2012 London Olympic Games, has supported Dubai’s goal to host the Olympic Games.

Coe said the city in the United Arab Emirates could eventually be in a position to stage the Olympic Games if it wins the right to host Expo 2020, the world trade fair organisation by the BIE (International Exhibitions Bureau).

"Expo [2020] would show Dubai can deliver,” Coe told The National. “There is absolutely no reason why the Olympics should not be an ambition for Dubai going forward.

“But you can't run before you can walk. It's important to show you have a track record in managing and delivering a big event. The Olympics has a whole other tier of complexity compared with Expo.”

Dubai is bidding to host Expo 2020 against Izmir (Turkey), Ayutthaya (Thailand) and Yekaterinburg (Russia).
