Christchurch City Council has voted in favour of proceeding with the construction of a new 30,000-seat stadium in the centre of the city despite cost estimates revealing the project is running significantly over budget.

Last month, the council launched a public consultation on whether to proceed with the build after the final design estimated the cost at NZ$683m ($414.6m/€416m); NZ$200m more than the original budget.
